BELFAST, NORTHERN IRELAND
If you would like to get involved with the Belfast Committee, please reach out to Sarah Lingo (email)
Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland. The region's connection with Tennessee dates from the Scots-Irish settlement of the area in the eighteenth century to the diverse relationships and cultural ties that link Belfast and Nashville today. Belfast has been an official sister city of Nashville, since 1995 in a partnership focusing on social projects, education, and musical and cultural exchange.

In the early 1990s, Sister Cities of Nashville’s Board President, Jimmy Webb, collaborated with Ian and Katherine Brick to establish a relationship with Belfast, Northern Ireland. The initial intent was to help Belfast promote peace in their city and rebuild a social foundation for its youth. The most famous program that came from the birth of the Nashville/Belfast relationship was the youth exchange program that encouraged teenagers of both Catholic and Protestant faiths to come to Nashville and live/work together to overcome the bias against each other that prevailed in Belfast.
Over the years, the Nashville-Belfast connection maintained the student exchange program. The partnership has now grown to also include the annual Belfast-Nashville Music Festival, professional exhanges and cultural/historical tours. New high school/university connections are currently being established as well. Through the SCN relationship, Vanderbilt, Belmont and Queens Universities have opened negotiations for partnership in a variety of ways. The Nashville-Belfast SCN connections continue to broaden each year and we are always looking for new ways to strengthen this exciting bond between our two cities!
